A flight from Dallas to Routt County was diverted to Denver International Airport today when passengers and crew smelled an acrid scent in the cabin, according to American Airlines.

No mechanical defects were immediately found, and the scent could have been oil or some other odor that made its way into the air-conditioning system, said airline spokesman Tim Wagner.

“It’s a closed environment, so you can have a burned out light bulb that can cause a smell,” Wagner said. “But anytime you have a situation like that, you have to exercise an abundance of caution.”

The Boeing 757 aircraft landed at DIA short after 1 p.m., and the 49 passengers were taken from DIA to Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden by bus.

The flight landed in Denver partly because of the better maintenance facilities there, Wagner said.
