FIELD TRIP DESCRIPTION HAS SOME LOOKING FOR COVER

Rep. Nancy Todd used an interesting choice of words about a committee’s field trip this afternoon.

Todd, D-Aurora, said the House Veterans & Military Affairs Committee would visit veterans care facilities in Aurora, then do a “drive by” past the new veterans hospital being built.

That caught Speaker Terrance Carroll’s attention. “Rep. Todd,” he said, “you should be careful about using the words ‘drive by,’ ‘Colfax’ and ‘Aurora’ in the same sentence.”

Speaking of the speaker, Carroll is one of four people whose portraits will be unveiled at a ceremony Feb. 10 at the Blair Caldwell African American Library. Carroll is the first black speaker of the House.

Also being honored are: • Former Rep. Wilma Webb, who also was first lady of Denver.

• Former Senate President Peter Groff, who now works for the Obama administration in Washington. Groff was the first black Senate president.

Stephanie O’Malley, Denver clerk and recorder.

Case in point.
