For Limon star Matt Brown, the student in student-athlete has always come first.
On Wednesday, The Denver Post’s 59th Gold Helmet Award winner signed to play football at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.
Brown, an aspiring engineer and a four-sport Badgers athlete, couldn’t pass on what he sees as a golden opportunity.
“I’m excited,” Brown said. “For me, it was about the school.”
The quarterback and linebacker also punted and kicked for Class 1A power Limon, the all-time leader in Colorado football titles (17). In 2009, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Brown passed for 1,437 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 1,043 yards and 20 TDs. He scored 180 points for the season; Limon fell to eventual state champion Yuma in the semifinals. Limon was 42-6 in his four years, with four South Central League championships.
Brown, who also plays basketball and baseball for the Badgers in addition to competing in track, said he will have the opportunity to also dabble in baseball for the Mines Orediggers.
