Denver received 20 license applications from medical-marijuana dispensaries Monday, the first day for dispensaries to apply for a license under new rules the city adopted earlier this year.

Under the new requirements, dispensaries need a special license to operate. Obtaining that requires dispensary owners to submit security plans, floor plans, zoning permits and other documents. They also must provide fingerprints for criminal background checks.

In addition to the 20 dispensary applications received Monday, city officials turned away six other applications because they were incomplete, said Penny May, the city’s director of Excise and Licenses.
