A suspected drunken driver speeding down Broadway hit a Denver traffic officer doing DUI checks about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Jackson said the officer had stopped a car in the 200 block of Broadway and had asked the driver to step out.

As the driver was doing sobriety test maneuvers at the direction of the officer, the officer spotted a speeding silver car. He realized the silver car was about to plow into himself and the driver he had stopped, according to Jackson.

Jackson said the officer pushed the man out of the way and tried to avoid being hit.

The silver car plowed into the patrol car, then hit the citizen’s car, then hit the officer, before striking a parked car and stopping.

Jackson said the officer received a knee injury and was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released. The man he had initially stopped was also taken to the hospital and administered a sobriety test.

Jackson said he did not have the results of that test.

The man driving the silver car was booked for driving while drunk, said Jackson.
