The University of Denver women’s golf team is in third place heading into the final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., one of the top early-season collegiate tournaments.
The Pioneers shot a 14-over-par 294 at Palos Verdes Golf Club on Tuesday for a 26-over 594 total, 14 shots behind the leader, Southern California. Colorado dropped one spot to 14th with a 56-over 624 total. The tournament features three teams ranked in the preseason top 10, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Texas Christian and No. 7 Arizona State, the defending NCAA champion.
Lisa McCloskey of Pepperdine leads with a 4-under 138. DU’s Ellie Givens is in a tie for ninth at 146.
• The DU men’s team finished sixth at the Callaway Invitational at the Farms Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., with a 38-over 902. Host San Diego won at 2-under 862. Bhavik Patel of Fresno State was the medalist with an 8-under 208. DU’s Espen Kofstad finished in a tie for third at 2-under 214 with Gunner Wiebe of San Diego, a standout at Kent Denver.
Phinney finishes seventh in stage.
Taylor Phinney of Boulder was the top American in the third stage of the Tour of Qatar, finishing seventh on the 85-mile stage from Dukhan to Mesaieed. Defending champion Tom Boonen of Belgium won the stage. Tyler Farrar of Boulder-based Team Garmin finished ninth.
Eagles’ Penner sets record in win.
Ryan Tobler scored twice to lead the Colorado Eagles to a 4-3 Central Hockey League win over the host Tulsa Oilers.
Eagles goalie Andrew Penner set a franchise record with his 44th career win.
