A Fort Carson medic and an Air Force airman who died on a bold mission to reclaim the body of a fallen comrade were among five service members honored at an Army memorial service Wednesday.
Four of the men died in a Jan. 3 ambush in Afghanistan that marked the first U.S. combat deaths of 2010.
The fifth was killed in an unrelated Jan. 16 attack, also in Afghanistan.
“They were all heroes. I know it’s a cliche, but it’s true,” Capt. Mike Erlandson of Fort Carson said after a packed service that drew more than 400 mourners to the post’s Soldiers’ Memorial Chapel.
