PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — A strong storm with hurricane-force winds has begun hitting American Samoa, where residents are still recovering from last year’s deadly tsunami.

Tropical Cyclone Rene hit the sparsely populated island of Manu’a with sustained winds of 75 mph Friday afternoon. Rene was expected to arrive in the capital of Pago Pago in the evening. The storm also may threaten Samoa, Tokelau Islands, Tonga and Fiji.
