Bobby Bowden says the specter of being reduced to a figurehead football coach — or resembling America’s favorite slapstick deputy — left him no choice but to step down at Florida State after the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl. “The ambassador-coach was something below my dignity,” Bowden, 80, recently told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. “It reminded me of Barney Fife. They gave him a gun, but they won’t let him put the bullet in there.”
