Gov. Bill Ritter announced Tuesday the winners of the third annual Governor’s Excellence in Renewable Energy Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions made by individuals and organizations to protect Colorado’s environment and diversify the state’s energy portfolio.

• Terry Meikle won the individual award for efforts to research and test woody bio mass as a power source for Colorado Springs Utilities.

• The small-business category went to OPX Biotechnologies of Boulder for technology to convert renewable crops and feedstocks into biofuel and bio-based chemistry products.

• Renewable Energy Systems Americas, a Broomfield-based operator of 40 wind farms nationwide, received the large-business nod for education and research and development.

• Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association was the institution category winner for working with customers to add solar and wind systems and purchasing electricity generated from methane gas.
