Denver police announced this evening that officers have nabbed the so-called “$83 bandit” after a bank robbery on Colorado Boulevard just before 2 p.m. Thursday.

The man in custody was identified as Frank Lewis, 37. The “$83 bandit,” whose nickname is based on his notes requesting specific amounts of money, is believed to have robbed 14 metro area banks since last March.

Public records indicate Lewis has lived in several places in Missouri, Utah, Texas and Colorado, and most recently lived in Fort Collins. He does not immediately appear to have a criminal record in Colorado, but has been a plaintiff and defendant in several small-claims civil lawsuits.

He was arrested on a charge of car theft in St. Louis in 2002, but the outcome of that case was not clear from records available this evening.

A Denver police officer detained Lewis shortly after a robbery at the U.S. Bank at 730 Colorado Blvd. this afternoon.

Saturday morning, a man fitting the description of the serial bank robber presented a note but didn’t show a weapon at the Compass Bank on East Colfax Avenue near Albion Street. He left without any taking any money, however.
