PUEBLO, Colo.—Authorities have arrested a Tennessee man suspected in the 1982 death of a woman who was stabbed and run over by a car.

Pueblo police had investigated 58-year-old Thomas Ray Cortinas soon after the death of 24-year-old Cheryl Valdez but dropped the case over concerns of police interrogation techniques and because interview tapes were inaudible.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that police reopened the investigation last month at the request of the Valdez family.

Cortinas was arrested Monday afternoon in Tennessee.

The Chieftain says that soon after the slaying, authorities found a knife with blood on it at Cortinas’ home and jogging clothes that were similar to what witnesses and an off-duty police officer said the suspect was wearing.
