Quadrai Carter’s 17 points on Tuesday led three Sand Creek Scorpions in double figures in a mild Class 5A upset in the first round, 71-68 at George Washington.
The Scorpions boys, a No. 10 seed, drew even at 12-12 and will be at Fairview on Friday. George Washington, the state runner-up a year ago and seeded seventh, ended 11-13.
Cordero Warren (16 points) and Darrius Peele (10) backed up Carter. The Scorpions outscored the Patriots 24-14 down the stretch.
ThunderRidge 71, Legacy 63.
Ditto for the Grizzlies boys, a No. 10 seed, who defeated the seventh-seeded Lightning in Broomfield in 5A’s first round.
Dave Day’s 24 points advanced ThunderRidge (10-14), which has a rare losing record this late in the season, to a Friday date at the Denver Prep League’s Abraham Lincoln.
Josh Heikkila added 13 points for the Grizzlies.
Jade Roberts paced Legacy, which ended 12-12, with 17 points.
Pomona 66, Cherokee Trail 56.
The ninth-seeded Panthers boys won on the road, in Aurora, against the eighth-seeded Cougars in 5A’s first round.
Jeff Brown’s 21 points and 15 by Alex Welsh lifted Pomona to a 15-9 mark and a Friday matchup in the second round at top-seeded Fountain-Fort Carson, champion of the Colorado Springs Metro League.
Austin Evans’ 14 points led Cherokee Trail (10-14).
Wheat Ridge 43, Silver Creek 31.
Elle Madsen’s 11 points led balanced scoring as the 4A Farmers girls won in the opening round at home.
Wheat Ridge, seeded fifth, next gets to travel to Steamboat Springs for a Friday matchup.
Silver Creek ended 10-14 and was paced by Jacy Drobney.
Rock Canyon 45, Sierra 41.
The Jaguars girls advanced to 4A’s second round behind Katie Pokrant’s 15 points in downing the Stallions. Rock Canyon next gets top-seeded Pueblo South on Friday.
