Michael Moore, a longtime certified public accountant who was active in dozens of community activities, still found time to run 106 marathons.

Moore, who died Jan. 19, ran marathons in Denver, Boston and Big Sur, Calif., among others.

Moore, 75, had been living in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. He battled cancer for several years.

Moore raised funds for the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect and was treasurer of the political campaigns of former Govs. Dick Lamm and Roy Romer and of a senatorial campaign for Gary Hart.

“He was immensely public-spirited and had that old-fashioned virtue of civic-mindedness,” said Lamm.

“He was terrific” as a board member of the Kempe Center, said former director Richard Krugman, dean of the medical school at the University of Colorado.

An early member of the board, Moore “helped bring a business sense to the fundraising aspect and was a nice bridge to the community,” said Krugman, director of the center from 1981 to 1992.

Moore started running marathons when he was in his 40s, said his daughter Angela Costello of Lakewood.

He was most proud of the Big Sur run but also ran in New York, Los Angeles and Lake Tahoe.

“I am pretty serious about my running,” Moore wrote in a summation of his life.

He was serious too about education and “loved for people to be educated,” said his former administrative assistant, Linda Tinderholt of Denver.

Moore was a member of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and was on a legislative committee to study higher education in Colorado as well as a Denver Public Schools committee formed to institute public-private projects to strengthen schools. After retiring, he was a planning consultant to several U.S. business schools.

He worked as an accountant for Ernst & Young and was active in state and national accountants organizations. In 1980, he was given the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants’ first public-service award.

Michael R. Moore was born in Davenport, Iowa, on Dec. 7, 1934, and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Ambrose University in Davenport.

He married Shirley Campbell on Jan. 19, 1957.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by five other daughters: Maureen Marlow of Centennial, Caroline Iraci of Highlands Ranch, Kathleen Zaccaro of Lakewood, Elizabeth Poe of Denver and Erin Swiekatun of Aurora; one son, Kevin Moore of Honolulu; and 19 grandchildren.
