RAPID CITY, S.D.—A former Denver police officer has been sentenced to serve two years in prison for shooting at a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper and Custer County deputies about a year ago.

Kachina McAlexander of Aurora, Colo., was convicted by a jury last month on three counts of aggravated assault and a weapons charge. Attempted murder charges had been dropped last summer.

McAlexander was arrested March 24, 2009, at a Super 8 Motel in Custer after authorities say she opened fire when law enforcement officers were called to her room to do a welfare check. No one was hit.

McAlexander was sentenced Monday to five years in prison with three years suspended. She will be eligible for parole in one year.
