A Bayfield man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for resisting and assaulting a federal marshal.
Donald Vanness was sentenced Feb. 17 by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Wiley Y. Daniel, according to a media release from the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Colorado.
In July of 2008 Vanness lead a U.S. deputy marshal on a high-speed chase in southwestern Colorado, the release said. Vanness was wanted in New Mexico for violation of a court-ordered supervised release.
At one point during the chase, Vanness “struck” a pursuing deputy’s vehicle with his car. Vanness eventually stopped, fled on foot and was captured.
Investigators found 15 grams of methamphetamine hidden in a “storage compartment” in the car.
In August of 2008, Vanness was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver. He pleaded guilty in November of 2009.
Vanness will serve three years of supervised release after finishing the prison term.
