The Northern Colorado baseball team let one get away in its season opener Friday.
The visiting Bears led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before giving up seven runs to 19th-ranked New Mexico in a 7-5 loss.
Senior left-hander James Quisenberry got the starting assignment for the Bears, throwing six scoreless innings and allowing five hits.
Offensively, the Bears were led by senior Tyler Borzileri, who was 3-for-5. Newcomers Bret Fanning and Kyle Hardman, along with junior T.J. Berge, had two hits apiece.
CU skiers lead Pioneers.
Colorado got solid outings from its men’s and women’s alpine and nordic teams to take a 25-point lead over the University of Denver on Friday at the midway point of the NCAA West Regional Championships in Steamboat Springs. The Buffs have 435 points after two days of competition. DU has 410 and third-place Alaska 382.
CU’s Matt Gelso won the men’s 10K classical, and DU’s Antje Maempel was first in the women’s 5K classical.
Falcons win two women’s tennis matches.
The Air Force women’s tennis team improved to 10-2 as it cruised past two local opponents.
The Falcons defeated CSU-Pueblo and Metro State, finishing the day undefeated in singles and doubles. None of the singles participants lost more than three games in any match.
Bears’ Bidne rallies to ninth-place finish.
Steve Bidne of Northern Colorado was named the America Sky Conference golfer of the week. Bidne overcame an opening round of 77 to finish with rounds of 71 and 72 to earn a ninth-place finish at the Washington State Snowman Getaway Tournament. It was Bidne’s fourth top-10 finish of the season.

Colorado’s Ann Mitenberger completed a 3,000-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean as part of a 12-person rowing crew. The Boulder resident was the only female competitor in a race that featured 36 teams. Her team accomplished the feat in 38 days despite facing weather, injuries and mechanical problems.
