ASPEN, Colo.—One of two skiers caught in an avalanche in Aspen was seriously injured after being buried in snow and pinned against a tree.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s office say the two skiers were part of a group of four who were skiing in Aspen Mountain Friday afternoon when the slide occurred. One skier was able to anchor himself to a tree and dig himself out of the snow while the other was swept for about 100 yards.

Officials say the avalanche slid about 1,500 feet and was 24 inches deep and 40 feet wide.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is warning people about the high avalanche danger after 500 slides were recorded in the last week.
