BROOMFIELD — The North Metro Task Force says an 11-year-old boy shot himself in the foot after his father used him to guard a medical- marijuana operation.

“I think the 11- year-old was protecting the marijuana grow,” said task force spokesman Jerry Peters. “It’s a lucrative business.”

9News isn’t naming the Broomfield man because he has not been charged. Peters said police plan to make an arrest today and charge the father of two with cultivation of marijuana and child abuse.

Peters said the boy shot himself with a .22-caliber pistol.

The boy’s father said the incident “was an accident.” Both he and his son are avid hunters, and the gun is his son’s weapon.

The father described himself to investigators as a “caregiver” and said he had licenses for some of the 30 plants.
