DENVER—Colorado lawmakers have killed a bill that would have banned shampoos, shaving creams and other personal products that contain ingredients known to cause cancer.

The House Judiciary Committee killed House Bill 1248 on Monday after opponents said it gave too much credence to scientific studies by the European Union and that no local studies warranted new laws.

Supporters say too many personal care products sold in Colorado contain ingredients, such as formaldehyde, coal tar and arsenic, which are linked to cancer and birth defects.
