NEDERLAND — Frozen Dead Guy Days seemed somewhat of a misnomer Saturday as temperatures hovered around the 50s in Nederland, contrasting sharply with the snowstorms and frigid weather that the mountain festival has faced in past years.

Celebrating the cryogenically frozen man stored near the town, the three-day festival kicked off Friday with opening ceremonies and the Space Oddity Ball featuring the music of Great American Taxi. Saturday began with the Parade of Hearses, followed by the Polar Plunge and the Coffin Races, each drawing large crowds.

Attendance was higher than in previous years most likely because of the warm weather, according to Jake Adler of the Nederland Police Department.

“I think this year is the biggest one I’ve seen,” Adler said, adding that the problems have been minimal and the festival appeared more family-oriented than in the past.
