Olympian and University of Colorado track star Jenny Barringer got more than she bargained for Sunday night at the Sportswomen of Colorado’s annual awards banquet.

She was the banquet’s guest speaker and award presenter, then got a surprise when she was named Colorado’s sportswoman of the year.

“Thank you for this award,” she told the audience. “I hope I can carry this award graciously through the next year, and I really appreciate all of the support. I decided to move to Colorado five years ago, and it’s been such a wonderful and welcoming place. I am excited for my professional years coming up right here in Colorado.”

Barringer set six NCAA records and seven CU records in 2009 — and was all-academic Big 12.
