RIFLE, Colo.—Garfield County Regional Airport is scheduled to close to airplane traffic for about seven months for improvement projects, including a realignment of the runway.

Airport director Brian Condie says the only aircraft landing at the airport from April 5 through Nov. 18 will be helicopters that don’t need a runway.

The airport will undergo about $33 million in federally funded improvements, including new runway lighting, new parking spaces for planes and equipment that will allow the airport to safely handle more landings in bad weather.

The airport handles a total of about 20,000 takeoffs and landings per year.
