GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—A vital east-west Colorado highway is closed for a third day so workers can break off loose rocks from a canyon wall in hopes of preventing another avalanche.
State officials still don’t know when the 17-mile stretch of Interstate 70 in western Colorado will reopen. The shortest detour is more than 200 miles long.
The highway has been closed since Monday after a rock slide rained boulders onto the roadway and punched gaping holes into an elevated section.
No one was hurt and no vehicles were damaged.
A crew spent Tuesday breaking rocks off the canyon wall and examining a huge boulder to see if should be broken up or pushed off the cliff.
The department says the workers will return to the canyon wall on Wednesday.
