LAS VEGAS—Sara Halasz scored 20 points and New Mexico closed the game on an 11-0 run to defeat Colorado State 67-54 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference women’s tournament Tuesday night.
Kim Mestdagh’s 3-pointer with 6:41 to play brought the Rams within 56-54, but they didn’t score again. Amy Beggin answered with a 3 for the Lobos (18-11). Beggin scored nine of her 18 points during the 11-0 run.
New Mexico, the No. 5 seed, will face fourth-seeded Utah on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Utah defeated Air Force 63-40 earlier Tuesday.
Chatil van Grinsven led No. 8 seeded Colorado State (13-17) with 16 points. Mestdagh scored 13, and Meghan Heimstra added 11.
New Mexico was 9-for-25 (36 percent) from behind the 3-point line while Colorado State was 5-for-17 (29 percent). Overall, the Lobos made 42 percent of their shots while the Rams made 36 percent.
