After signing two new front-line players to its defense this week, the Broncos on Wednesday released defense end mainstay Kenny Peterson.

Peterson started 14 games for the Broncos last season, recording a career-high 40 tackles to lead all Denver lineman.

But Peterson became expendable after Denver signed defensive ends Jarvis Green and Justin Bannan in recent days.

Peterson, 31, an eight-year pro out of Ohio State, played in 40 games in four years for the Broncos. He was a freshman at Canton-McKinley High School in Ohio when Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was the senior quarterback there.

He was scheduled to make $1.04 million this season. Bannan signed a contract last Friday for five years and $22 million.
