Brianna Culberson of the University of Denver women’s basketball team is one of nine finalists for the V Foundation comeback award, the foundation announced Thursday.

Culberson, a junior, scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games this season despite family issues that have continued since her freshman season. In her first year, she battled unexplained fainting spells, hypoglycemia and a knee injury. In her sophomore year, her father, Larry, suffered an unexpected heart arrhythmia and a seizure and was in a coma for more than two weeks. In addition, Larry Culberson was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

Ice for sale.

The Colorado Ice of the Indoor Football League announced that the team is up for sale, including all operations, equipment and staff related to the team, which plays at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. The team said it expects to complete the sale in the “near term” and will continue trying to make the IFL playoffs.

MWC presidents to entertain expansion.

The presidents of Mountain West Conference schools will meet informally today in Las Vegas to discuss possible expansion beyond the current nine members.

No action is expected in the meeting that coincides with the MWC basketball tournament.

“My sense is the majority is going in with an open mind,” CSU president Tony Frank said Thursday.

MWC commissioner Craig Thompson emphasized Wednesday that any discussion is unrelated to speculation about other conference movement. As for candidates to join the fold, Thompson said, “It’s not even that developed.”

Despite speculation that the Pac-10 might grab a MWC school or two or that a domino shift could send TCU to the Big 12, Thompson said no president has heard from another conference.
