Cancer treatments will keep Nuggets coach George Karl away from the team for the remainder off its road trip.
The Nuggets announced today that Karl will not join the team for the final three games of its current road trip — New Orleans (tonight), Memphis (Saturday) and Houston (Monday).
Karl is still adjusting to the feeding tube that was inserted into his stomach during surgery Monday. He remained in Denver while the team opened its four-game trip with a 110-102 win against Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Nuggets improved to 2-0 in games coached this season by assistant Adrian Dantley while Karl goes through radiation and chemotherapy treatment for throat and neck cancer.
“I have tremendous trust in A.D. and my staff,” Karl said. “I think they’ll keep the team in a good place over the next few days, and hopefully I’ll be ready to rejoin them when they come home next week.”
At this morning’s shootaround at New Orleans Arena, Dantley said Karl’s condition remains high on the players’ minds.
“The whole team thinks about George — I just got through talking to them about him,” Dantley said. “We hope he’s going well and get’s healthy and back as soon as possible. Everybody is concerned about his health.”
