THORNTON, Colo.—About 185 people will lose their jobs as the state’s fifth-largest school district cuts $24 million from its budget for the next school year.
Districts statewide have faced shrinking budgets amid falling state tax revenues.
The cuts at Adams 12 Five Star Schools include 24 high school teachers and two high school assistant principals. Certain student fees will rise. High school lacrosse and eighth-grade football and softball programs will be eliminated.
Superintendent Chris Gdowski says he expects $15 million to $20 million more will have to be cut for the 2011-2012 school year.
Adams 12 district has about 42,000 students in Broomfield, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Thornton and Westminster.
