GREELEY, Colo.—A suspected gang member has been charged on accusations that he arranged a hit on a Weld County inmate who was due to testify against him in four cases.

Thirty-year-old Michael Cole has been charged with retaliating against a witness, a felony punishable by up to 12 years in prison. Cole already faced charges including carjacking, menacing and attempted murder.

The latest charge stems from a beating last month that left 35-year-old inmate Michael Gonzales with fractures to his eye socket and nose and a possible fractured skull.

Twenty-six-year-old inmate Ernest Williams also is being held in connection with the beating. He previously faced charges related to a kidnapping.

An arrest affidavit says all three have gang connections.
