A man who died in a snowmobile crash near Aspen has been identified.
Shane William Bennett, 31, of Portland, Ore., was snowmobiling Thursday with friends in the Lenado area when he hit a tree, according to the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.
People who were with Bennett performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bennett suffered severe head and neck trauma in the crash, the coroner’s office said.
The accident happened at about 6:20 p.m. about five miles northwest of Aspen in an area popular with snowmobilers that’s generally inaccessible to automobiles in the winter, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
Using snowmobiles responders from the sheriff’s office, Aspen Ambulance, Aspen Fire Department, and Mountain Rescue Aspen, reached the crash site at about 7:20 p.m.
Resuscitation efforts continued until about 8:00 p.m. when Bennett was declared deceased, the sheriff’s office said.
