EAGLE, Colo.—A Basalt man convicted in a brutal knife attack on his ex-girlfriend has been sentenced to 42 years in prison.

Ian Michael Ranney was convicted of attempted murder for the knife attack on his former girlfriend in a Basalt-area trailer park in 2008. Ranney, 26, slashed and sawed at the woman’s face with a 12-inch bread knife. The woman survived, and Ranney apologized to her in his sentencing hearing Thursday.

But Eagle County District Judge Fred Gannett cited the “sheer viciousness” of the attack and sentenced him to 36 years in prison for attempted murder and an addition six years for stalking.
