BOULDER, Colo.—The Nerf guns are back, but only temporarily.

The University of Colorado said in December that a policy banning fake guns on campus would keep students from using Nerf guns to play Humans vs. Zombies, a variation of tag where humans can freeze zombies by hitting them with cushy missiles.

Last Saturday night, students played a game with Nerf guns on the first two floors of the engineering building after university police issued them a one-time, temporary weapons waiver. Police spokeswoman Molly Bosley says it was played in a “controlled and secure” building, where bystanders were clearly informed about the game.

A university-regulated game was held earlier this month, but that was played with balled-up socks.
