RIFLE, Colo.—Improvements at the Garfield County airport will cost about $1.5 million more than original estimates.
Airport manager Brian Condie says blasting crews removing bedrock to make way for the realignment of a runway found that the bedrock is 20 feet thicker than expected. The extra blasting expense is adding about $1.5 million to the current $11.5 million phase of improvements.
The overall cost of the project is projected to be $33 million or more.
The deadline for work to be completed is November. For now, work is continuing while the county waits to hear whether the Federal Aviation Administration can provide more money.
