Bob Hamley is the new head coach of the Colorado Mammoth, the National Lacrosse League team announced Monday.

Hamley, hired as an assistant coach a month ago, takes over for Steve Govett. Govett, the team’s president and general manager, became head coach when he fired Bob McMahon after the Mammoth’s 0-2 start.

“We’re trying every possible combination to get the team back on track,” Govett said. “This is another step in the process.”

Hamley, 44, has a 46-42 career record in the NLL. He has been a coach and general manager of the Arizona Sting and Edmonton Rush.

“We have to figure things out to get back to where Mammoth fans and the organization itself are accustomed to,” Hamley said. “I’m excited by the increased responsibility.”

The Mammoth (2-7) plays the Washington Stealth (7-3) on Friday at the Pepsi Center.

In 2005, Hamley became the first person in league history to be coach of the year and GM of the year after Arizona reached the Champion’s Cup final. Two years later, Arizona again fell one win shy of an NLL title.

McMahon is returning to be Hamley’s assistant.
