When a garage exploded this morning in Fort Collins, a father and his toddler were inside, and both were badly burned.

They were rushed to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, before the child, Trenton Viney, was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital in Aurora, then on to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Sacramento, authorities said.

The father, Josh Viney, was treated and released. A neighbor told the Fort Collins Coloradoan that the child was badly burned from the waist up.

The cause of the noontime blaze in the 900 block of Camelot Court is still under investigation, said Poudre Fire Authority Capt. Patrick Love. It likely started when an engine being cleaned in the garage somehow sparked and “exploded,” he said.

Firefighters contained most of the fire to the garage, but the victim’s home suffered heavy smoke and water damage. An adjoining unit in the two-story duplex was also damage by smoke and water.
