
Matthew Thieu, the eighth-grader wounded by a gunman at Deer Creek Middle School in Jefferson County, last month is being honored for his bravery by the Denver Area Council of Boy Scouts of America.
Matthew, a member of Boy Scout Troop 808 at Bear Valley Church in Lakewood, will also receive a week-long scholarship to Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch in Elbert County this summer, the Denver Area Council said in a statement this afternoon.
Matthew and adult scout volunteers will be honored at a recognition dinner tonight at The Renaissance Hotel in Denver.
Matthew, 14, was shot in the back and 13-year-old Reagan Weber were wounded when a gunman opened fire with a hunting rifle outside the school on Feb. 23. Both recovered. Thieu was hit in the back; Reagan was grazed by a bullet fragment, before a teacher tackled the shooter.
Former Deer Creek student Bruco “Bo” Strong Eagle Eastwood, 32, remains in the Jefferson County jail on $1 million bail, facing felony attempted murder, assault, child abuse and weapons charges.
