The ever-stylish, functional trench coat is taking on heady new looks this season as designers offer ruffles, sheen and different fabrics to give the wardrobe staple a new life.
“It’s one of fashion’s most enduring basics,” said Arlene Goldstein, a fashion director for Belk. “It’s really a great completer piece. It’s not just about keeping dry or keeping warm; it’s a fashion item.” Take your basic black or white pant, and if it’s still a little cool out there, pull it on. and it’s a great way to go.”
Trench coats are ideal for spring, when a coat is too heavy but a little warmth is needed. Goldstein calls this year’s designs “trench with a twist.”
“We’re seeing puffed sleeves, unexpected colors, ruffles,” she said. “There’s a little shine out there, and hidden pockets.”
While trench classics have endured, designers enjoy playing with the coat’s styles and colors. In 2004, consumers fell deeply in love with a pink trench from Gap.
This year, shoppers are loving trench coats with ruffles that run lengthwise, as well as embellishments and pearlized fabrics, says Sonya Cosentini, style expert for TJ Maxx and Marshalls.
She recommends sticking with a neutral-colored trench coat so it can stretch across your wardrobe. The now-hot blushy “makeup palette” colors of pink, coral, cream and white are good picks, she says. Knee-length trenches are the most versatile, she says.
Designers are playing with lengths and cuts, too.
Cropped trenches — some chopped at the waist — are being paired with pants or short skirts for an edgy look.
And don’t forget the men. After all, the trench coat was created around 1900 for officers in the British army.
Today, men have a squad of styles to pick from.
New this spring for the guys: slimmer cuts and more embellishments (think epaulets and handsome buckles).
Worn for work, the traditional trench should hit just above the knee. Don’t forget to allow extra room for a suit or sport coat underneath.
For a more trendy look, the trench can be shorter.
When picking a color, traditional beige is always safe. Black, navy and dark gray are more youthful and edgy.
