GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A defense attorney says the mind of a man who shot and killed his 13-year-old son as the boy slept “was engulfed in an unreal reality.”
Public defender Ryan Esplin made opening statements Tuesday in the trial of 53-year-old man Allen Grabe, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to killing his son, Jacob.
Esplin says Allen Grabe was once pronounced sane and twice pronounced insane in evaluations by three different doctors.
Jacob had been treated for Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. Deputy District Attorney Jason Conley told jurors Tuesday that Allen Grabe didn’t have an emotional connection to the eighth-grader.
The trial is slated to run through April 9.
