A Douglas County Schools student ran down lanes of I-25 this morning in traffic after flashing a knife on a school bus. She was safely placed in custody a short time later.
The incident happened at about 8:15 a.m on I-25 near East Belleview Avenue, according to a media release from the Greenwood Village Police Department.
The bus was northbound on the highway when police received a 911 call about the girl with a knife. When police arrived the girl was out of the bus and on the highway, police said.
The girl jumped the center median and ran into the southbound traffic lanes. She climbed over a fence near Orchard Road and was taken into “protective custody,” police said.
The girl, who was not identified, was taken to Skyridge Medical Center by paramedics with the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority.
Only one other student was on the bus a the time of the incident and there were no injuries.
Details on the girl’s condition were not released.
A spokeswoman for Douglas County Schools confirmed the girl was a district student but offered no other details.
Police said criminal charges are not likely in the incident, which tied up traffic in the area for several minutes during the morning rush hour.
