Forecasters said this afternoon that chances are strong that Denver area residents could wake up to 2 to 4 inches of new snow Saturday morning.

Rain between noon and 3 p.m. Friday will turn to snow Friday evening, amounting to less than a half inch before midnight, but as temperatures drop into the 20s overnight snow could add to a few inches by morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow mixed with winds up to 30 mph could at times create blizzard conditions over southeast Colorado, the southern foothills, areas along the Palmer Divide and the Interstate 70 corridor east of Denver, forecasters said.

The southern foothills could see 8 to 16 inches, while the plains could see 6 to 12 inches, the Weather Service said this afternoon in its updated forecast.

The central mountains are in line for accumulations of 5 to 11 inches, forecasters said.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the central mountains from noon Friday to noon Saturday.

A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow or blowing snow could cause difficult travel, with limited visibility and slick roads, according to the Weather Service.

Temperatures in the metro region are expected to climb into the 40s Saturday afternoon, though there is still a 20 percent chance of precipitation, according to the forecast.

The high on Sunday is forecast to be 57 degrees the mid-60s on Monday and 69 on Tuesday as warm weather and sunny skies are expected all of next week.
