“Cycling New Zealand” ($24.99, Lonely Planet)
Author Scott Kennedy divides New Zealand into eight bicycling zones, from Auckland on the North Island to Otago on the South Island. He describes the country’s best mountain, rural (watch out for the sheep and kiwi crossing signs) and city biking, and dispenses advice on cycling on deserted roads. It covers the best areas for cycle touring, selected because they are scenic, they pass through interesting towns by historic sights and they are easy to reach by public transport. Each ride is graded according to its level of difficulty. For those who prefer to ride the entire length of New Zealand (“a worthy goal, and one that is easily achievable — if only on paper,” says Kennedy) numerous routes are available. Kennedy estimates that the average cyclist who decides to do that should expect to be on the road for at least a month. The guide also includes a directory with information on accommodations, advice on getting from island to island, and substantive suggestions on choosing and maintaining your bicycle.
