AURORA, Colo.—Aurora police say they have filed their first homicide cold case based on DNA evidence.
Police said Monday they have identified 39-year-old Kevin Lewayne McKinney as a suspect in the 1998 death of Diane Juanita Caldwell, whose body was found in a field in the Denver suburb of Aurora.
McKinney faces a first-degree murder charge and is currently being held in a Colorado prison on charges unrelated to Caldwell’s death.
Police say the Colorado Bureau of Investigations examined DNA from the scene in 2003 but the investigation did not lead to a suspect at the time. Police say an Aurora detective began working on the Caldwell case again on July 2008 and his investigation led McKinney being identified as a suspect.
