A former city worker accused of embezzling more than $600,000 from the Denver Department of Human Services was sentenced to six years in prison today.
Ivan Guerrero, 45, also was ordered to pay $797,011 in restitution and $3,022 in extradition costs.
Guerrero was charged in 2006 with setting up phony benefits accounts and withdrawing money from them. He disappeared after he was released following his arrest and fled rather than stay in Denver to face the charges.
He was arrested in Florida in January after he was pulled over on a traffic stop, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
Guerrero’s former roommate, Jose Luis Torres-Montalvo, also was charged with taking money from the benefits accounts. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to felony theft and was sentenced to six years of probation, 100 hours of public service and $60,827 in restitution.
