Getting your player ready...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Mets shortstop Jose Reyes will start the season on the disabled list to get in better shape.

Reyes said the team told him Thursday he’ll be on the DL because he’s had so little practice in spring training. He returned to camp last week following a three-week absence because of thyroid issues.

“I want to be there on opening day, there’s no doubt, but we have to make the right decision,” Reyes said. “If I miss a couple of games, it won’t be a big deal because I have to get ready for the season.”

Reyes isn’t sure how long he’ll be on the DL.

• Closer Francisco Rodri- guez has left the Mets to attend to family issues in Venezuela. General manager Omar Minaya said he expects the right-hander to be back with the team by opening day.

Footnotes.

Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton was placed on the 15-day DL because of a left oblique strain, and he could be out three to six weeks.

• Curtis Granderson will be the starting center fielder for the Yankees.

• Infielder Julio Lugo was traded from the Cardinals to the Orioles for a player to be named or cash.

• The Rangers acquired first baseman Ryan Garko off waivers from the Mariners.

• David Huff was named the No. 5 starter for the Indians.

• The Dodgers named Blake DeWitt their opening-day second baseman and knuckleballer Charlie Haeger their No. 5 starter.
