Some facts about Scrabble, the popular word game that Hasbro has the rights to in North America and Mattel owns in other countries.

Invented in 1938 by an out-of-work architect named Alfred Butts in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

  •  Hasbro sells more than a million Scrabble board games annually in the U.S. and Canada — The National Scrabble Association estimates that there more than 50 million players in North America.

  •  More than 100 million sets of the game have been sold in 29 different languages, according to Mattel’s Web site.

  •  The digital version is the ninth top-grossing app on the Apple iPhone and fifth on the newly introduced iPad.
