The University of Colorado at Boulder has received a $2.4 million U.S. Department of Energy grant to develop a graduate engineering program on electric smart-grid technology, the Ritter administration announced Thursday.

The university will use the economic-stimulus funds to create a program focusing on technologies such as networking, wireless communications and cyber security within electric-power systems.

The smart grid is being designed to more effectively manage electricity generation and consumption by using computers and sensors to increase information on flow and use.

The academic program will offer a full master-of-science degree and a shorter certificate and can be completed on campus or online.

“We know that our future generations will use and create energy differently than we do, and smart-grid technologies will be critical to how we manage our energy consumption,” Gov. Bill Ritter said in a statement.
