UNITED NATIONS — Ambassadors from China and five major powers met for the first time Thursday to discuss possible sanctions against Iran, which is refusing to suspend uranium enrichment.

Heading into the meeting with U.N. envoys from the U.S., Britain, Russia, France and Germany, China’s new ambassador, Li Baodong, said this was a “very important negotiation.”

The ambassadors will be discussing proposals for a possible resolution that well-informed diplomats said will target Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, which has major interests in nuclear proliferation activities.
