The Rapids won their opening game in the U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the host Kansas City Wizards at Durwood Stadium at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Wells Thompson scored twice for Colorado, including a game-tying goal in the 24th minute. Kansas City had taken an early lead on Teal Bunbury’s unassisted goal in the fourth minute.
Thompson’s game-winner, in the 80th minute, came off an assist from Claudio Lopez, who saw his first action in a Rapids uniform since signing April 3. Lopez streaked down the right side and found Thompson 12 yards out for a goal in the lower right corner.
Wyoming extends Christensen contract.
Wyoming football coach Dave Christensen received a one-year extension through the 2014 season.
Last year, Christensen led the Cowboys to a 7-6 record, and became the first football coach in Wyoming history to win a bowl game in his first season, when Wyoming defeated Fresno State 35-28 in double overtime at the 2009 New Mexico Bowl.
UNC flies higher than Air Force.
The Northern Colorado baseball team had 23 hits and six homers, defeating Air Force 18-14 in Greeley for its ninth straight win.
Northern Colorado’s Jarod Berggren and Adrian Schenk both hit two homers and had four RBIs, and Casey Coy added four RBIs and scored three runs. Senior Seth Budde went 6-for-6, all singles, to tie the school record for most hits in a game.
The Falcons had five players with multiple hits, led by Garrett Custons, who went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. The two teams have played 21 games in the last five years, with an average of 18 runs being scored each game.
Pioneers finish 19th.
The University of Denver men’s golf team finished 19th at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Pioneers shot a 62-over-par 902, with Espen Kofstad leading the Pioneers, with a 2-under 208 for eighth place.
• The Fort Lewis men’s golf team finished with a three-round 885 to win the Air Force J.V. Invite at the Eisenhower Golf Course at the Academy.
CU-Colorado Springs finished second with an 887.
Central Oklahoma’s Andrew Green took top individual honors with a 1-under 215. Fort Lewis’ Devin Schriener finished second with a 218, one stroke ahead of Regis’ Greg Johnson and Colorado Christian’s Jon Klingensmith, who tied for third.
CSU hoopsters to host Drake.
The Colorado State men’s basketball team will host Drake, which was 14-19 last season, on Dec. 1 as part of the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Conference Challenge.

QB commits to Buffs.
Dexter Foreman, a 6-foot-2, 212 pound dual-threat quarterback at Manvel (Texas) High, told he committed to Colorado for the signing class of 2011. He had one other offer (Tulsa) and told the affiliate he might take other trips if presented with the opportunity.
