Louisville-based GlobeImmune Inc.’s experimental hepatitis-C vaccine, used with existing drugs, cleared the virus from infected patients better than the medications alone.

The vaccine was especially effective in patients with a hard-to-treat genetic subtype of the disease, according to a company-funded study released Thursday at a medical meeting in Vienna.

The results pave the way for a larger trial of the vaccine and may make closely held GlobeImmune attractive to drugmakers seeking to boost their product pipelines, said Edward Tenthoff, an analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co. in New York.
